Mount Bromo, A Peak of Memories ( Indonesia – Malaysia Youth Exchange Program ) _ Part 3_
With her trade mark uniform , the flight attendants of Garuda Indonesia courteously greeted us at the front cabin that afternoon. Our flight, GA 936, has just landed smoothly at Juanda International Airport, Surabaya, a city which is being to be host of Indonesian phase at this time IMYEP 2013. And voila, after the plane landed at 19:45 pm, PCMI Jatim, as comittee welcomed and picked us up in front of the airport, then we moving to the hotel Santika, in Pandegiling, Surabaya.
In the ballroom of the hotel, the committee has been prepared welcoming ceremony for greeting us and then continued with the distribution of hotel room key. Aaahh .. yess … Leng still being my roommate for this time, on the 11th floor . Haha . To get a beautiful view of the city of Surabaya, high floor did not be matter . Thank you for Elisha Graves Otis, an American, first man who found out the elevator.
We still feel excited even though it was night. No matter our feet were sore, a sweet smile still have chapped anywhere . Even our minds are branched, because of the stock of our clean clothes could count by fingers, while it was still very long journey and also would be exhausting . But anyway , that was an art in every journey. You actually join this program , so you should be accept all the risk . Oh .. no no …. not a risk , but consequence. hahaha
The day is almost over, but we still created plan for the next three days, create our concept for Cultural Performance in Office Mayor of Surabaya. Perhaps this could be the once of our lifetimes. We wish all the best and so well-planned . No excuse for that !
And the night had busier for scraping the dark. That meant that we had to close the day with a joy. Dreaming . Then woke up the next morning with a new spirit and hope . Our chat and jokes stopped temporarily. We all hide in the deep heart of Metropolis City, at the east corner at the island of Java.
Goodnight Leng . Goodnight Surabaya .

Yawn. A yawning is a signal that indicates that we are sleepy. Well, that’s right , that morning many of us are constantly yawning, sleeping less the night before. But it did not be matter, because every day is a memory, that was our priciple. So..what a pity if you were being here without useful activities and maximizing your role.
That morning, we rushed to visit Department of Youth and Sports of East Java Province. Applause and greeted given by Kadispora. We really enjoyed the welcoming dance called ‘Ngremo’ which performed by elementary school children in Surabaya. Ow, at that moment, i wore a traditional Batik from Yogyakarta, called Parang Rusak motif. Parang Rusak has some phylosophy. It describe that we have to never give up. The motif with letter ‘S’ refered to Sea (Samudera), which mean that we have to spread our hopes, as wide as the ocean was. This is me when i wore that Batik.
We also had to pass through the affected area in Sidoarjo (Lumpur Lapindo). It was a hard slap , because the wider region increases , and the problem was not necessarily finished, settles for many years . I did not know , what is the envisaged of the youth/young Malaysian when passing through the area . I think that was not a proud story to tell. Hahaha ..
Hmm … our journey continues further into the tourist area, Tanggulangin, it still located in Sidoarjo . Tanggulangin are a production centers of leather craftsmen, where the goods are sold is all handmade with sufficient quality. Probably much like Cibaduyut in West Java or Manding in Yogyakarta.
After that, then we started to leave Tanggulangin by bus, heading to Malang, because our next next destination is Mount Bromo . Oh , all of our stuffs at the hotel, had previously been collected in one place , in room 605 , we only carry goods and clothes that need to be when in Bromo.
Mount Bromo is a beautiful mountain as i seen in magazines or the media . I quite exciting to enjoy Bromo, well , because this is the my first time went to Bromo . To get there , need 2-3 hours off from Sidoarjo to Bromo . Even, then we had to switch to a smaller transport , and then took us around the area at Bromo, which is in Bromo Cottages. That was beautiful cottages in minimalist-style, equipped with very unique elevator. ( hahaha ) Our room mate was still same, so exactly…Leng , still being my room mate, faithful in room 304. Here we go!
The cold air did not dampen our intention to joke – giggles ¬ discuss what needs to be discussed , even that does not need to be discussed were also discussed . That’s how we always have the ingredients to be discussed . Yeah . At least to minimize cold air , laughing and sharing jokes with friends is an option to warmed your body.
Morning Call 02:30 am
The next day, when of other people sleep soundly, we were obliged to gather in the middle of the lobby at 2:30 am to start climbing our trip, just for the sake to see the sunrise on time . Omg. The cold had made me ddi not want to speak in a few moments. My upper and lower teeth bumping each other. In fact , some friends of my jeep , Andar , Ina , Vio , Imah , and Vivi feel nauseous. But no matte, this togetherness cannot be repeated later. Like Fahri said, we could come to the same place, but we can not turn the memory we have been through.
I’ll tell you one thing . Going to Bromo is one of my dreams since i was at elementary school . I want it after seen a picture in a calendar with the photo caption , ‘ Mount Bromo , East Java ‘ . Smoke and distinctive shape of the mountain, is able to impressed me. Then i asked my father about the location of the mountain. He told me that the location of the mountain is in East Java. He adds, perhaps we could go together at a time . But .. because of busy, even a dozen years passed until i stepped on a day when i could get there, but … not with my father.
What we call it ? It ` s BROMO ! A Peak of Memories
Travel to the scenic substation took about half an hour, and it was enough churning dregs of my last dinner in my stomach . I swear!! haha. My stomach meddled like riding a ferris wheel at Dufan, Jakarta. But that was so memorable. Moreover, the cold air turns unexpected, so that i decided to rent a coat jackets that are offered around the ascent. Simply, it just only ten thousand rupiah for rent one jacket. You didn`t need to leave your ID card or other identification card. Just give your sweetest smile to the tenant. hahahaha
Up above, is still at 04.00 am, still long enough to wait for the sun rise, even dawn we could hear a call prayer yet. I decided toi take this advantage, collapsing my body on a long bench for naps, but instead.. i ended up falling asleep until 05.00 am. Hahaha
A woke up, immediately i was ready to welcome the sunrise, i had to capture the moment on my camera , respectively . And voila , the sun was rising. I’ve seen a small form of power and greatness of God. How we increasingly look very small in God`s power. It’s not just a ordinary journey, but also a journey of life. Its such a wonderful journey that i`ve ever felt before.
Bromo is enchanting . The craters and sand which often called with ‘Pasir Berbisik’ always make admiration by most people , including me. I realized that Indonesia is a rich country. I love this nature of hand- painting, that painted by the Almighty . Hmm … a lot of nice scenery around here, such as Bukit Cinta , Teletubbie hill , Pasir Berbisik , and Bromo crater itself. Everything is a natural riches fitting for us that we have to be proud of.
Our Jeep was stopped in the desert after the Bukit Cinta . I like the power of God when i confronted with it . The view is very unusual, it all had to perpetuated . The beautiful hand of God is never wrong in drawing, even for small sand which suddenly have filled our shoes. Without warning , my friend and i instantly capture images in a row at the top of the hill and sand. Wow . Like being in a fairy tale . If Bromo supposed a country, absolutely my heart is a passport to got there .
We continued our journey towards the temple and the stairs to the ‘Kawah Cinta’. After our jeep parked, i decided to riding a horse when walking up from the parking area to the bottom of a stair. Understandably, our jeep parked quite far from the summit Kawah Cinta. So, we had two choices, to reach it by walking, or chose to ride a horse to save a bit of energy. And , finally i chose to ride a horse. Before it, i spend a minute to take a picture near Hindush Pura over there (a place to Hindush doing prayer)
After passing through about 200 stairs ( i counted it ), then i arrived at the summit of Kawah Cinta . Trust me , our struggle had been paid off, when we seen the beautiful summit of that Kawah Cinta. The view from the summit crater really beyond my expectations. I can the the crater closer, even just a few hundred meters away looked down.
Hardly to speak. It’s hard to choose the right words. For me , this is the most beautiful journey of nature in my life. Besides, there are other things that i can take from Bromo and the its surrounding nature. How the people around Bromo live in their believeness and always honor their creator .
Have you ever heard Kasadha ceremony? It also well-known with Hari Raya Yadnya Kesada. It is a traditional ceremony that was held by the Hindush at Bromo Area .This ceremony always been held on date 14th or 16th in the Month of Kasadha (Hindhu Tradition), once a year. Embodiments of the ceremony is to use as a symbolic representation. Unfortunately, the ceremony hold out only on that month, so when i went there i’m not being able to be a witness and saw the ceremony .
For me , how the people around Bromo respect their environmental ordinances, is out of my curiosity In my point of view , Bromo is represented as a symbol of eternity and the pinnacle of life. Pasir Berbisik and the hills around it are followers that will strengthen the presence of Bromo . While the people around Bromo is driving and guard ecosystem , that preserves the ecosystem being damaged and always be grateful for having give the eternity to enjoy all the blessings of the Lord in the vicinity. And it was so magical to me. Ah , maybe it also a good point that makes me want to go back.
Okay. Nevermind . The time has wore on, and its requiring us to immediately back to the jeep and proceeded to return to the cottages . Furthermore , we will continue the journey to get back to Surabaya, doing some visits PT PAL , and also to the House of Sampoerna. Then will end with dinner at a restaurant in around the longest bridge in Java, Suramadu Bridge. After that, we were back to hotel and (again and again) we did to train our performances. Well. lets see. What comes around goes around.

Today, we were given the chance to drive around in one of the department stores in Surabaya , precisely at ITC Plaza and also studied at the Nuclear Technology Centre , around the campus ITS, we make one stop in Soto Lamongan for had lunch.
After that, we had to go back to the hotel because we had to prepare everything for cultural performances in front of the mayor of Surabaya . Including wearing kebaya costume for the gala dinner.
At 6:30 pm we were ready in the hotel lobby and ready go to the mayor ‘s official residence that is located in Surabaya. At that time, me with Rani performed Javanese Traditional Song (Nyinden) together instead. We sang songs titled Prahu Layar, who pitched an excited moments, indicating that we enjoyed our visit in Surabaya .
As delegates each province , one of our tasks is to promote various traditional arts of our region , respectively . There is a value we cherish and passion to build a country with more positive . The Malaysian delegation performed first . Malaysia delegates sang Ayo Mama, whilst we sang a medley song titled ‘Medley Nusantara’.
Malaysian delegation also featured as a martial arts performance, while Indonesian, was performing Ongkek Manis dance and Rentak Bulian and i also became one of the dancer.
There is a sense of pride mixed emotion when i swinging my body and also sing a song in front of officials Java . Oh , God . I never thought that i was the elected person as representative of my province, Yogyakarta. Well…actually we were the people who represented each province .
Both Malaysia and Indonesia mutually support each other . At the end of the event , we were performing together on one stage singing Sahabat Selamanya, by Padi . Hey , who said that Indonesia – Malaysia are always hostile ? They were all good. Dont ever judge something if you even do not understand about it. Feel yourself , how our friends , how we can break the ice. How do we build a strong friendship, across the country line and also break the boundaries!!
After the show, we all get praise from the officials present there and also from the local committee . Big thanks to my imyepers family . We did it, proficiat ! Thank you Rani , i`ve got learn a new dance , Ongkek Manis. Thank you , all Malaysian friends , we already shown them, what a sense of our togetherness and friendship between two countries.
But never mind , we are living it. We know who we were respectively. We know how to behave .
Last but not least, I would like to thank you for all of the people who is already been come to my life. I can learn a lot of different personalities. I would like to thank you to Padi, an Indonesian Band, because the song provides the soundtrack in the course of our friendship .. Thank you Surabaya , because we having been a witness of our new friendship intertwine. I love all the way memories created.
Now i`ve also get a lot of new learning about culture. Really giving me some good of point of view. Oh, and i also want to give once more thank you for the things that giving me a lot of learning, Mount Bromo.
Although only a few hours to enjoy Bromo , but I feel like i’ve learned a dozen years of a mountain philosophy. Mount will always provide livelihood . We can see the power of our Creator through mountain. Sometimes, if the mountain seems not a good for you and other human beings, remember that the mountain was never fault. The mountain was probably just angry. Yes , but only a little upset because of humans are not capable to maintain and balance the ecosystem, even arbitrary and ultimately destructive. The mountain just will be giving a little lesson.
Bromo . After a dozen years , we finally met directly. Previously i had only seen in pictures , now i can see you directly. I feel your sand, enjoying the sun that arise behind your back , a gentle breeze that even now i can still feel a bit behind my skin.
Thank you…thank you, Bromo.
The skies above you will always be my wonderful memories . Warm greeting at that time will always be etched , until the wind might not recognize the jungle again . Mellow smoke and your perfect color will always have in mind . I had never imagined to eliminate all the wonderful lessons that you’ve given . Now i can immediately tell my father , that i ‘ve been managed to reach you , Bromo. I reach you in perfect time along with a new family . I step on you together with different legs of the 31 places in the land of Indonesia, even from other country also.
Might we also add…..the skies and peak over there are always so amazingly beautiful . And maybe we ‘ll meet again in long time , or even very long . In any event , i will always remember this trip , a beauty trip, also about the passion to continue to live life and face all the hurdles .
Storms may dampen us sometimes in our lives , then going gets tough and our spirits hit rock bottom , but the storms always pass and nature cycles to another beautiful day. We could remind ourselves to stand by each other and weather it together , so that when the storm passes , we could emerge and continue our lives towards each better tomorrow .
Glad to see you, Bromo. The peak of memories.
Yeah! So? What happen next? ?
